Plant Trailer Maintenance |
Maintaining the plant trailers bearings
- Maintenance of tapered roller bearings is necessary for optimum bearing life.
- Bearings should be removed and repacked in grease every 24 months or 20,000km whichever occurs first.
- Remove Wheel.
- Remove grease cap and split pin.
- Loosen adjusting nut and remove from axle.
- Pull the hub assembly and remove it from the axle spindle.
- Knock out inner bearing cone and grease seal.
- Inspect existing grease for dust and grime – if dust is evident the seal must be replaced.
- Clean existing grease from bearing.
- Inspect bearing for wear and cup scouring – ensure roller cage on bearing cone is intact, replace both the Bearing, cup and cone together if wear is present.
Recommended Grease – Veedol L122EP or equivalent. - Pack bearing cones with grease and install into wheel hub – inner bearing cone is held in place with grease seal.
- Ensure the washer is fitted between the adjusting nut and the outer bearing cone.
- Tighten the adjusting nut while rotating the wheel hub in the opposite direction to the nut rotation until there is a slight bind 9approx 170 Nm torque) to be sure that all bearing surfaces are in contact.
- Then back off the adjusting nut 1/16 to ¼ of a turn to the nearest locking slot or sufficiently to allow the hub to rotate freely within the limits of .025mm (0.001”) to .25mm (0.010”) end play.
- Lock adjusting nut into position with new split pin.
Other areas that will need attention
Failure to back off adjusting nut will cause bearings to run hot causing damage which may result in wheel lock or wheel coming off during use. - Wheel nuts must be in proper condition and fitted correctly to ensure a secure wheel attachment.
- For wheel nuts to function properly the taper on the nut must match the countersink in the wheel, the taper on both the nut and wheel must not be damaged and the seating force of the nut must be sufficient to hold the nut in place.
- Inspect wheel nut taper and wheel countersink for damage every 10,000km or 12 months whichever occurs first.
- If wheel mounting holes become elongated this may be the result of mismatched wheel and nut tapers and/or incorrect wheel nut torque – these issues should be corrected.
- Ensure all brake components are in good repair at all times – brake performance is significantly effected by the quality of the parts used we recommend that only genuine parts be used.
- Check brake shoes, lining and drums for wear and damage every 20,000km or 24 months whichever occurs first – replace part if wear is visible.
- To ensure trailer stability and safety regular maintenance of the suspension is essential.
- Check spring eye and rocker (if fitted), bushes and pins for wear or damage every 5000 km or 6 months whichever occurs first – failure to maintain these components will result in elongation of the spring mounting holes resulting in premature/increased maintenance costs.
- U-bolts must be checked for tightness after the first 5000 km of operation and periodically thereafter every 10,000 km or 12 months whichever occurs first – loose U-bolts may result in broken spring leaves.
